When you have ownership of something you naturally want the project to represent who you are. I think this promotes you to work harder than you would if it was not reflecting yourself. At the same time, it does add a layer of complexity. It adds a sense of pride and caution. The pride is the positive part that pushes me to want the eportfolio to look professional and the highest level that I can produce. The caution leads me to be careful of what content I create, because everyone will have access to view the information, forever. ![]() It is significant to look at all sides of the spectrum when creating an eportfolio. I think that overall there is an incredible advantage to create and use an eportfolio. However, it comes to mind how much more I will invest my time and energy, when owning something. When I have rented a home in the past, I took little concern or care over the well-being of the home. I spent minimal time on repairs and nothing on adding value. Now owning a home, I value this ownership. Everything that is added or fixed is a direct reflection of ourselves. Since we plan on owning the home for many years to come, that multiplies the need to take greater care of the property. The previous owners knew that this was just a temporary house for them, and fixed things carelessly and recklessly. And this leads me into the difference of how someone will treat their eportoflio that plans on keeping it past this program versus someone that is creating simply for credit. I think if you are planning on owning something past an expiration date, it adds a greater since of self-satisfaction. If you are just creating a project only to receive credit, the ownership lies more in the completion and not completely with you. I think that is where choice come into play. If we have choice then justifiably we own our work. In situations where the teacher allows no choice and grades specifically on how they wanted the assignment to turn out, then the choice is almost choked and the ownership is revoked. Students that are creating their eportfolio just for credit may not be using technology to the fullest potential. If we are simply posting traditional papers on blogs, are we using technology to its full capacity? (Rikard, 2015) At times technology is disguised as being used, but really is no different than traditional ideas. For example when teachers use Smart Boards to not become an interactive classroom, but using it in the same way as you would a chalkboard. This defeats the purpose, and the advanced technology is lost. However, I think that eportfolios unlike Smart-boards are more interactive than turning in a traditional paper to a professor. Even if someone is using an eportfolio in this way, it still allows the world access to the information that traditional paper would not. I see little disadvantage of using the eportfolio, but I had to push myself to evaluate to see all sides of the equation. I think when you are able to view all perspectives, even with an excellent idea, it helps you perfect the concept even more. References Rikard, A. (2015, August 10). Ed Surge News.
