To create any meaningful change, you must win over both the hearts and the minds of people (Kotter, 2011). It is important to lead with the why or emotional reasoning to awaken the audiences heart to the need for embracing change. Then we must back these emotions with reasoning and facts of how this change will benefit others and what we can do to provide an opportunity for the changes to occur. The key to making long-term change possible is combining both the feeling of our emotions and the logical thinking part.
To create change their needs to be a sense of urgency and minimal anxiety about these changes (Kotter, 2013). There needs to be a sense of urgency to provide our students with the best learning environment possible without the stress and anxiety. Students should be able to leave school with a sense of confidence that they have skills to conquer obstacles that come their way. This is the true "why" of our organization, allowing students the skills and opportunity to thrive in real-world situations. To accomplish this why the classroom should mimic the real world by providing choices for students to grow and fail. We need to cultivate a culture where students learn how to learn, instead of having teachers throwing information at the students and hoping it sticks. Blended learning will provide students with the tools and resources to experience real learning through life situations and solving problems.
At Ford Middle School, we believe providing students with opportunities and skills to thrive in real world situations and become successful long-term problem solvers.
We can accomplish this by establishing an environment that facilitates student learning by providing students with choices, so they can take ownership and control over their learning.
Implementing blended learning will allow students to collaborate with peers, and work at their own pace through experimental and problem-based learning.
